Picture Thing #1 CSF_Cooling_Tower

A few people have been asking about the picture on top of the page and the reason behind having it on the blog.

In terms of this picture it is of a cooling tower on the site of the old sugar factory in Carlow, Ireland, about ten miles away from where I grew up and used to live. The factory was closed and torn down around 6 years ago during the Celtic Tiger boom. They intended on building a new town center on the site, while keeping the cooling tower as a monument to the past. However due to the crash the huge site remains abandoned with the tower in the middle surrounded by acres and acres of rubble. This reminds me of Detroit.

Detroit is where I get most of my inspiration in terms of jazz, soul, motown and techno. The center of Detroit is mainly full of abandoned buildings and ghost estates due to a number of recessions that have hit the city. The city has largely only developed in the suburbs with the core remaining desolate. The image of Detroit as a desolate industrial landscape is definitely romanticized by most Detroit Techno fans, as the music is seen as very industrial and technical in terms of imagery with the soul coming from the producer in terms of making the track.

I think the picture of the cooling tower relates to this idea, and without getting too pretentious or deep it is a personal thought that I can get inspiration from places close to home that can inspire me in the same way as Detroit has inspired the creators of Detroit Techno.

Heres a link which mite help explain a little bit of what I think of Detroit and Industrial imagery
