Gig Thing #1 Jeff Mills_Red Box_Dublin

OK so I know that I am going back in time with this one, new years eve 2002 to be exact but in order to kick start this blog I want to give you guys an idea of who I am and what I'm into. This gig was possibly the most important for me as a young DJ and Detroit Techno fan, to witness such a legend as Jeff Mills at the age of 16 was amazing and the fact it was on new years eve in Dublin just added to sense that I was witnessing something great.

Just to give you guys some info on Jeff Mills just in case you haven't heard of him before, he is basically one of the founding fathers of Detroit Techno. Mills performed on the infamous Electrifying Mojo radio show in Detroit in the early 1980's. This show would go on to influence other founding fathers of Detroit Techno such as the Bellevue Three, Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, and also Mad Mike Banks, Carl Craig and Richie Hawtin to name just a few.

Mills also went on to set up the Label and collective Underground Resistance with Mad Mike Banks. One of my favorite albums by the man is 'At first Sight' brought out in 2002. He is also known as “the wizard” due to his unbelievable ability behind the wheels of steel; Mills would often use three turntables and mix up to 90 records in an hour. In my view, he is possibly the most technically gifted techno DJ in the world today.

Back to the gig, I was only 16 at the time and me and a mate of mine had won two tickets to the new years eve party in the Redbox in Dublin. I was kinda nervous heading up to Dublin as I was only 16 and this was the biggest night of the year in one of the biggest clubs in Dublin. All was good though' I had an excellent fake id and being on the guest list bettered our chances of getting in which we did. I have to say at this stage I was well on my way, quiet pissed actually', however by the time the 'wizard' got on stage I was well up and alert for the show. I managed to sneak up into a VIP area beside the DJ box and witness the whole spectacle that was Jeff Mill DJing.

One thing that I had noticed is that everyone around me was doing the same thing, basically standing there and staring at the man in amazement as he worked his magic. Then he dropped his own track 'Devices' and the tune of the year 'So much love to give' by Together and the place just erupted. What a night, I will miss the Redbox but I'll always remember that night as one of the best' witnessing one of the greatest.

Check out the man below in 2002, in Japan. Enjoy the magic on the wheels of steel...

Indie Thing #1 The_Rapture

Alright peoples its been a while so lets get down to it. I have left this blog for far too long, now I have some time on my hands so I am going to pick up where I left off with a review of 'The Raptures' new album 'In the Grace of your Love'.

I first came across the Rapture way back when 'House of Jealous Lovers' was released in 2002, and I stumbled across 'Out of the races and onto the track' which is one of my all time favorite albums due to its unconventional approach and sounds.
Anyway back to the longly anticipated 'In the Grace of Your Love' album, which features a wide range of styles which all reflect a more soulful and reflective band, no doubt a lot of the theme of this album is based around the death of Luke Jenners mother, and a number of band members becoming parents. Much of the lyrics reflect upon love and maturity with a constant hook that the Rapture always perfect, a number of tracks which caught my attention include 'Sail Away', 'Blue Bird' , title track 'In the Grace of Your Love' which reflects a lot on their 'Out of the races and onto the track' album and the first single from the album 'How Deep is Your Love', which has the sickest piano and sax loops that make for a classic dance track...
This album is worth the wait of almost 5 years and there up tempo electro indie rock sounds cant fail with the soulful, reflective mood of this album, below I have included 'How deep is your love', with some nice video editing of the classic film 'beat street'...enjoy
